1. About the Conference

Why Limuru?

We chose Limuru as a central location where community members from across Kenya can come together and learn from each other, and it is also close to Nairobi for those flying in. This conference is about bringing communities from different conservation areas — coastal regions, forests, rangelands, and more — together to share experiences, challenges, and solutions.

We are working to make attendance as accessible as possible, including bursary opportunities for community members who need financial support to get here.

What makes this conference unique?

While Kenya has hosted many conservation meetings, workshops, and conferences, this is the first national event designed explicitly around and dedicated to community-led conservation.

Community leaders are central to shaping the agenda, sharing knowledge, and influencing outcomes. Unlike other forums where community participation is secondary, here communities are leaders — not just participants — guiding discussions and decisions on conservation priorities.

Haven't communities been involved in conservation conferences before?

Yes, communities have participated in various workshops and side events, but those events were typically policy- or institution-driven, with communities in supporting roles. This conference puts community voices at the centre, alongside conservation practitioners, policymakers, and funders.

Why is this important?

Community-led conservation is essential for lasting impact, but recognition and support have been inconsistent. This conference provides a dedicated platform for communities to share experiences, exchange best practices, and help shape the future of conservation in Kenya and beyond.

How did the idea for this conference come about?

Ewaso Lions received the Whitley Gold Award in 2023 to support the development of a Community-Led Conservation framework. This three-year initiative has led to the planned launch of the framework in September this year, followed by a national conference.

The conference builds on the success of a workshop held in Samburu in November 2024, where strong interest from communities and partners highlighted the need for a broader, more inclusive national platform.

We are deeply grateful to Whitley Fund for Nature for their support from the outset of this work.

Who is the target audience?

The conference is primarily designed for community leaders and members from conservation areas across East Africa and around the world. It will also bring together conservation practitioners, policymakers, and funders who play a role in supporting community-led conservation.

3. Travel and Accommodation

What is Brackenhurst, and what can I expect from the venue?

Brackenhurst is a scenic, eco-conscious conference and retreat centre set among tea fields and indigenous forests in Limuru, Kiambu County, approximately 30 km northwest of Nairobi and around 45 km from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

It is known for its serene atmosphere, cool highland climate, and lush surroundings — a fitting setting for a conference focused on nature and conservation.

Which airport is closest to the venue?

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is the main international gateway, located approximately 45–49 km away. The drive typically takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic via the Nairobi Expressway.

Wilson Airport is geographically closer at approximately 34–38 km away, but handles primarily domestic and regional flights. A taxi or pre-arranged transfer from Wilson to Brackenhurst typically takes 30–45 minutes.

Limuru Train Station is the nearest rail option, though services were suspended as of January 2026. Please check the current status before travelling.

Can I stay at Brackenhurst?

Yes we recommend participants stay at Brackenhurst if they are not from Nairobi as this is easier. Brackenhurst offers a variety of accommodation types from single rooms, twins, triples, quads and more. To book your accommodation, click here.

Are there recommended hotels or guesthouses near the venue?

Attendees are encouraged to book accommodation either at Brackenhurst where the conference is being held or the Amoria Hotel where transport will be provided to and from Brackenhurst.

Is there a special conference rate for accommodation?

There is no special conference rate for accommodation at this time.

Will transport be provided between hotels and the venue?

Local car hire for self-drive is available, and hotels can arrange transport through their front desks. Uber and Bolt also operate in the area, though we recommend booking in advance as finding a driver can sometimes take time.

What is the local currency, and are cards accepted?

The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). Credit and debit cards — primarily Visa and Mastercard — are widely accepted at Brackenhurst and at nearby hotels including Amoria Boutique Hotel and Muthu Sovereign Suites. There are ATMs in Limuru Town, about 5–10 minutes away, that accept international cards.

It is also worth carrying small denominations of Kenyan Shillings for tips, local transport, and market purchases, where card payments may not be accepted.

6. Safety and Wellbeing

Are there any health and safety considerations I should be aware of?

  • Yellow Fever: Check whether your country of residence is classified as high-risk for yellow fever. If so, vaccination is required, and you will need to present a valid yellow fever certificate on arrival in Kenya. Further guidance is available from the Kenya National Public Health Institute, the Kenya Ministry of Health, and the World Health Organization.
  • Altitude: Brackenhurst sits at approximately 2,240 m (7,350 ft) above sea level. If you are travelling from lower altitudes, you may notice some shortness of breath or fatigue on arrival. Stay well hydrated and take it easy on your first day.
  • Climate: The area has a cool highland climate, and temperatures can drop significantly at night. Layering your clothing is strongly recommended. November is particularly cold and rainy so please come prepared.
  • Sun: UV exposure is stronger than it feels at this altitude, even on overcast days. A high-SPF sunscreen is advisable.
  • Water: Treated water is used at Brackenhurst and surrounding hotels, but drinking bottled or filtered water is generally recommended to avoid stomach upsets.
  • Malaria: The Limuru/Tigoni area is considered low-risk for malaria due to its cool climate. However, if you plan to travel to lower-altitude areas such as Mombasa, consult a health professional in advance.
  • Night travel: Roads in the area can be dark and misty after dark. We recommend using a trusted taxi service for any evening journeys rather than walking between locations.
  • Nature trails: Brackenhurst’s trails are safe and well-maintained. Please stay on marked paths.

7. Beyond the Conference

Are there networking sessions or social events?

Yes, the conference has been designed with plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow attendees. Morning wellbeing sessions are available to sign up for.

There will also be a dedicated showcase space where you can explore other participants’ work during tea breaks — a great environment for informal conversations and connections.
